The School’s philosophy is driven by its vision statement and revolves around the principle that all children are different, they have different personalities, different abilities and different backgrounds. The work in class is differentiated so that children work at their individual levels.
Broadhurst education is skills based and children are taught critical thinking skills, which involve a variety of cognitive processes right from the start of school. The emphasis of the school is not on providing children with volumes of facts but rather to equip the children with the skills to identify critical information, record it effectively and apply it appropriately.
We implement the School Vision by focusing on teaching tools that drive a thinking skills curriculum.Children are capable of thinking and our focus is to impart life-long tools, so that the children become skilful, critical and creative thinkers. These implemented tools encourage the children to think more deeply and creatively about relevant subjects. Skillful thinking is challenging and requires continuous practice and reflection. We value thinking at Broadhurst and in our methodology we make thinking skills explicit. We apply cognitive terminology and label and identify cognitive processes. In our everyday classroom practice, we apply Dr. De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats, Dr. Hyerle’s Thinking Maps, the Growth Mindset and the Habits of Mind.
The children are taught critical thinking strategies from a very early age. The emphasis is an interactive,child-centered approach with the teacher as facilitator. At all times the teachers are encouraged to use the varied resources at the school to enhance the delivery of the lessons. All children are allowed to work to their maximum ability. The teaching methodology at Broadhurst School is dynamic and up to date and our children have no difficulty in making the transition from one school to another throughout the world.
Above all, we aim to make Broadhurst the sort of caring environment that you would want all children to experience. It is only within a friendly, happy and disciplined environment that effective learning can take place.
Broadhurst Primary School takes pride in its approach to academics and offers a unique syllabus. The schoolsubscribes membership to the IEB to deliver International Benchmark Tests (IBT) in partnership with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). These Australian based IBTs are used globally to assess English, Mathematics and Science. Benchmark tests were first introduced in 2009 at Broadhurst Primary for Standards 3 and 6. Standard 7 benchmark tests were introduced in 2015.
Students are now registered for English, Mathematics and Science in Standards 3 to 7. These tests are designed by ACER as benchmark tests whose results reflect standards that are comparable to international tests such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). Each student receives a student report from IBT which benchmarks their results against South African and International students.
Other subjects taught at the School include Social Sciences, French, Setswana, Visual & Performing Arts (Music, Art, Drama and Dance), Computing and Physical Education.
The school implements a comprehensive special needs programme with highly qualified staff and the support of teacher assistants to ensure all children benefit from the education philosophy of the school.
